
In 2004, Megan O'Rourke, wrote an incredible article for The New Yorker about the cogs and wheels behind the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and serial fiction. Go Here to read about Edward Stratemeyer, the man who in 1905, introduced books that were not written but produced in the same coordinated assembly line production as Cars and tennis shoes. Stratemeyer traded in the lone hunchbacked novelist for a web of freelancers who produced long-running, streams of standardized novels published under pen names owned by Stratemeyer’s publishing syndicate, Stratemeyer Syndicate.
