"I thought that if people were encouraged to build a table with their own hands, for example, they would be able to understand the thinking behind it." Enzo Mari
In 1974, Enzo Mari, an italian artist, designer, all around do-gooder, planned Autoprogettazione,"Self Design", fourteen pieces of furniture that could be constructed by anyone with hands and a hammer and access to #2 medium-grade, knotty pine, some of the humblest material on the market. Mari challenged the conventions of furniture production and dissemination by giving the construction plans away for free and encouraging people to take up and construct a table.
